Taking Back Illinois Rally & Petition Drive

Date:
Feb 18

Join us for a rally and informational meeting about the Illinois Fair Map Amendment Saturday, February 20, at 9:30 am at Childers Banquet Center at 3113 Dries Lane at Forrest Hill in Peoria.

This is a statewide redistricting reform campaign that includes a citizen's petition drive with a goal of making redistricting more transparent and accessible in Illinois.  The Peoria Area Chamber of Commerce is assisting in the local effort.  The initiative is also backed by Illinois Chamber of Commerce, League of Women Voters of Illinois, Illinois Farm Bureau and many other organizations around Illinois.

For the past 30 years, legislators have been able to define their own districts but the Illinois Fair Map Amendment takes the redistricting process away from the legislators and puts it in the hands of an independent commission. Illinois Fair Map Amendment petitions are being circulated and supporters need to receive 500,000 signatures by April 1st in order to get the issue on the ballot. Peoria Area Chamber of Commerce President Roberta Parks says this has become a citizens' petition drive because state lawmakers won't take up the issue on their own. "Lawmakers didn't take up the issue on their own. Lawmakers didn't vote to put this issue on the ballot last session. So, this is now the chance for citizens to step forward to change the tone of Illinois government for our future."

Please RSVP to Jan Deissler 691-8342 if you want (optional) breakfast for $10.
