Legislative Changes Affect Local Business

The Illinois General Assembly wrapped up its session at the end of May making several changes that will affect the regional business community.  Roberta Parks, President of the Peoria Area Chamber of Commerce, talks about some of those changes.

The Future of the Region

Jim McConoughey recently joined Dan Diorio on 1470's Greg and Dan Show to talk about the economy and this region's future.  They discussed the continued decline in unemployment, the "new economy" and what type of jobs we are starting to see.  They also shared opinions on what this region needs to focus on in order to continue growth including creation of destination districts and retraining of the workforce.

Unemployment Drops Again

Peoria MSA unemployment has declined to its lowest level since early 2009.  Unemployment numbers for May are reportedly 7.2%, down .8% from April and down 2.2% from this time last year.  While the national unemployment level remained steady from last month, the state of Illinois unemployment level rose .4% to 9.0%.

Heartland Partnership Chairman Accepts New Job

As you likely know, Michael Bryant, President and CEO of Methodist Health Services Corporation, has accepted a new position in Lynchburg Virginia.  We want to extend great thanks to Michael for his leadership as Chairman of The Heartland Partnership Board of Directors.  Michael has provided great leadership to this organization and his passion for growing our region has resulted in many great things for area communities.  We wish him the very best as the new president and CEO of Centra Health in Lynchburg Virgina.

 



Peoria Ranks Top 10 for Healthy Living

Peoria is ranked in the top 10 nationwide for total well-being and health of its residents according to Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index® (WBI).   Peoria was ranked 10th among midsized cities and 13th in the nation overall based on life evaluation, emotional health, physical health, healthy behavior, work environment and basic access to healthcare.  The state of Illinois was ranked 26th.  Click here for full report.

What's Your AHA Moment?

Mutual of Omaha will be visiting Peoria to hear your stories during their annual “Aha Moments” tour on August 1st and 2nd.  This is the third year for the program and Peoria is one of 25 cities they will visit across America to collect real “Aha Moments”.  They will have a video studio set up at the Riverplex where you can stop by and share your story between 11 am to 7 pm each day.
